Sculpting, Art, Mixed Martial Art, and the Human Experience
Sculpting, Art, Mixed Martial Art, are, in a nutshell, human experiences. As an avid fan of all forms of art, I'm a firm believer that the creating individual is more important than any style or form that he or she may represent. I believe in learning from all disciplines, absorb from the process, and not be aborbed by it; know the properties of the clay, and not defend the clay. Be it fine art classic style, comicbook style, movie FX style, anime style, each style has something to offer. For the same token, each clay has its own unique advantages. There's no point for a fine artist to critize an anime sculptor or vice versa; or for someone who uses Chavant to diss another for using Super Sculpey. A great fighter is great because he/she can punch, kick, throw, grapple, and maintain control of the self. Dont get me wrong, a person can choose to be just a boxer, just like a sculptor can choose to be just a fine artist - it's all up to the individual. But I think that learning from other disciplines can only serve the artist in a positive way, and I urge all beginning sculptors to keep an open mind and learn from artists of different styles, because in the end, the creating individual is always more important than the creation itself. The art is only a vehicle that will get you somewhere. Once you've crossed the river, there's no need to carry the boat with you.
