"Simon Lee is in a category all by himself. His sense of drama and raw power make him the Frazetta of monster sculpting and the elegance and specificity of his designs give his creations gravity and realism. A true master!"

BECOMING: in-progress sculpt.
Designed and sculpted by Simon Lee / Spiderzero
Will be produced as resin kit: Yes
Estimated release date: not available

This piece is basically a human character morphing into a spider / insect / humanoid creature.

Pictures are in reverse chronological order (most recent updates shown first)
Originally I started with a basic aluminum armature, not knowing what I was going to sculpt. I laid out the rough musculature in super sculpey and posed the piece. At first, the character came out in a typical hero pose, which I thought was not that inspiring, so I threw in the monster transformation aspects. Then I tried having the character kneeling, on all fours, and finally added the extra hind legs, and at that point, I was happy with the overall character design.

This piece is titled BECOMING (which was inspired by a Pantera song), but it also records the becoming of myself as a sculptor/producer of commercial resin kits. Normally I would just sculpt a character in one piece and be done with. But with this one, since I had the intention of releasing this as a resin kit, I decided to cut it up (pre-baked) to work on the details. Then I realized that I took the hard road, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise - I learned A LOT doing this piece.

Enjoy. and check back for updates.

Camelo, thanks for the kind words. On this piece, the gray was Super Sculpey + regular black Sculpey. I did it so that I can see the texture more clearly on a darker surface (SS Firm will give you the same benefit). The texture was done with a loop tool and I used alcohol to smooth out the surface. Chavant will stick to baked sculpey, so that allows me to make further changes easier, even on baked sculpey. hope this helps.

Hello-Amazing work first of all! Secondly what is the gray mixed in with the super sculpey? Is it sculpey firm? On a sculpey piece what do you do to get those amazing skin textures? I noticed on the medusa piece that you used chavant-is that for any particular reason? Please help the aspiring sculptor! Thanks for your work!

The Hands and Feet of this Critter are beyond belief! You are doing such exquisite stuff I cannot tell; detailing, concept, the whole range of your figures, all is well balanced and freaks the hell out of me. Weird and strange, the way it should be. Allow me to be a bit provocative: Who is Takeya? Frank

Dude, I would love to know what it is you consider "sculpting mistakes". This one is absolutely fascinating.

montana angelo carmelo, Fimo's similar to regular Sculpey. Super Sculpey is a little bit harder.

thanks darkmeq! hugepeanut, to me, the aluminum foil is not a must, but it does help. When you do use it, don't bulk out beyond the outermost point of the rib cage. When you're sculpting a human figure, think of the armature/aluminum foil as the skeleton, then lay out the muscles piece by piece before blending them down. the anatomy will be more accurate that way.

Thanx for the wire pic post, thats the par I'm having most problems with, always bulk out too much with alu.foil do you use that stuff alot?

thanks llamahead:) some of the pictures were taken after I'd brushed down the unbaked sculpt with alcohol (hence the shine). As for the veins, I try to do them before the sculpt's baked.

this is absolutely amazing... it just leaves me speechless... how do you get the shinyness? do you bake it before you add the vein details?
